Since our launch we have awarded over $10 million to organizations changing the lives of Canadian caregivers. These examples show how your generous contribution is put into action to change lives across the country.

LAKEHEAD UNIVERISTY

Focuses on conducting high quality knowledge translation, research, and education to advance health and social care promoting the health and wellbeing of people aging across their life cycle.

British Columbia Children’s Hospital

This initiative focuses on underserved rural and urban communities, addressing the critical gap in sibling-focused resources through monthly virtual sessions and bi-annual in-person gatherings.

Works to enhance the quality of life for family caregivers in Montréal, Quebec, by addressing the challenges they face, promoting recognition, and striving to meet the needs of adult caregivers in the region.

NATIONAL GRANTS

In 2024, we awarded another $3.1 million through our national grants to organizations working to create transformational change in the lives of family caregivers across Canada.
21 organizations in 7 provinces were awarded grants of up to $300,000.

2024 National Grant Recipients
ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
The Oladele Foundation The funding will be used to support the Oladele Foundation Caregivers Support Initiative, which is designed to assist caregivers of cancer patients and survivors, particularly within the African/Black community. This initiative includes four key components: training workshops focusing on mental health, nutritional support for cancer patients, and assessing community resources; group self-care activities and respite care support to allow caregivers a day to rest and recharge; and the development and launch of an African Caregivers Toolkit, providing tailored cancer information and caregiving resources for the Black community.
Alberta Caregivers Association The funding will be used to support a project led by five Canadian caregiver organizations aimed at improving support for caregivers by addressing overlooked needs such as recognition, transportation, and caregiver support lines. Using the IMPACT Lab framework, the project will foster collaboration and innovation to drive systemic change in caregiving. It builds on past work and involves caregivers at every stage, with the goal of creating a stronger caregiving community across Canada.
Wellspring Alberta The funding will be used to support Wellspring Alberta in providing free, accessible support for individuals affected by cancer, including caregivers, through a variety of programs. These programs focus on six key areas: physical activity, education, symptom management, therapeutic arts, financial/workplace strategies, and emotional support. The funding will also help expand specialized programs for caregivers, children, young adults, and diverse communities, encouraging caregivers to participate in all programs to enhance their wellbeing and resilience.
Stigma-Free Society The funding will be used to expand Stigma-Free Society's youth and rural toolkits with enhanced resources for parents, caregivers, and families, focusing on emotional support through webinars and a docuseries. Key components of the initiative include a Caregiver Self-Assessment Tool, an Expert Tips and Advice Manual developed with mental health professionals, and a Webinar Series addressing caregiving issues. The project also includes Caregiver Stories to inspire caregivers, an Expanded Resource Directory for easy access to support services, and a Mental Health Caregiver Docuseries with positive messages.
BC Children's Hospital Foundation The funding will be used to support the Sibling Support Centre & Services project, which addresses the lack of support for young siblings of children with chronic health conditions and disabilities in BC, Alberta, and Yukon. The project will provide free online peer support groups for siblings aged 8-11, using a Hub and Spoke model to connect community partners with BC Children's Hospital. Five organizations, including BC Children's Hospital and the Family Support Institute of BC, are involved in the initiative. The program will feature monthly online sessions, in-person events, and tailored curricula.
Inclusion New Brunswick Inc The funding will be used to support the Caregivers Connect Project, which aims to assist caregivers across New Brunswick by providing essential services and ensuring their voices are heard. Caregivers will work one-on-one with an Inclusion NB advocate to address their needs and connect to resources. In addition to offering direct support to 200 caregivers, the project will create opportunities for caregivers to build meaningful relationships and engage in peer mentorship.
Caregivers Nova Scotia Association The funding will be used to revise, redesign, and modernize the Caregiver's Handbook, a key resource for unpaid family and friend caregivers in Nova Scotia. This update will include adding new and relevant information, as well as resources specifically for underserved populations such as working caregivers, young caregivers, newcomers, and the LGBTQIA+ community. The handbook will also be rewritten using plain, inclusive language to improve accessibility. By addressing these needs, the funding will help enhance the caregiving experience across Nova Scotia and ensure comprehensive support for a wide range of caregivers.
Inclusion Nova Scotia Society The funding will be used to expand the EmpowerCare project from its pilot in Cape Breton across mainland Nova Scotia. This initiative will support families and caregivers of individuals with disabilities through a grassroots, localized approach. With the ongoing transformative changes in the disability support sector in Nova Scotia, the project will provide emotional support, educational workshops, resource navigation, and advocacy. By empowering caregivers with the knowledge and tools they need, EmpowerCare aims to enhance the quality of life for families during this critical time.
The Governing Council Of The University Of Toronto The funding will be used to support a Phase 2b study and Phase 3 consensus meeting as part of ongoing research at the University of Toronto. This initiative aims to address the gaps in knowledge regarding the mental health and well-being of unpaid caregivers in Canada, specifically focusing on racial and ethnic minority groups such as South Asian, Black, and East Asian caregivers. The funding will support semi-structured interviews to gather in-depth qualitative data and convene a consensus meeting with key stakeholders to identify policy recommendations, tools, and interventions to improve caregiver support.
UHN Foundation The funding will be used to develop and implement a Virtual Caregiver Assistant to support caregivers during the hospital-to-home transition. This innovative tool will be a web-based application powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing, providing caregivers with personalized support, information, and resources tailored to their individual needs. The project team will collaborate with digital developers, data analysts, and content experts to ensure the Virtual Caregiver Assistant offers accurate, vetted information from trusted organizations. The goal is to reduce the burden on caregivers by offering immediate, reliable guidance to help them navigate the challenges of caring for their loved ones after a hospital stay.

2023 National Grant Recipients
ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
Wellspring Alberta Wellspring Alberta provides evidence-based programs and support services tailored to individuals and families affected by cancer. Our funding will support programs offered free of charge and accessible in person, over the phone, and online. These programs serve as invaluable resources throughout an individual’s cancer journey, and they address specific needs of caregivers, young adults, children within cancer-affected families, and diverse communities, including Indigenous peoples. This inclusive approach welcomes all caregivers to participate in programs, irrespective of formal registration.
Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories With our support, the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories will continue to expand its offerings of programs that support caregivers in their caregiving journey. They offer this support at no cost to caregivers and include in-person and online services to help remove some of the barriers to accessing support. The programs include First Link, Seeds of Hope, Minds in Motion, caregiver support groups, one-on-one support, and ASANT Café and Dementia Talk. These programs each provide information, education, navigational support and a space for caregivers to come together to learn and support one another.
Family Caregiver Society of British Columbia (FCBC) We are proud to support a program by FCBC that aims to make family and friend caregivers independent clients within the healthcare system. It focuses on providing support related to each caregiver's social determinants of health. This innovative program in Canada has successfully made referrals for emotional and practical support and education through FCBC's programs. The program has seen an increase in referrals from various health settings and providers across the province. Moving forward, the program aims to transform its groundwork into a refined and easy-to-adopt model, embracing the Social Prescribing approach to assess caregivers' needs holistically, including housing, nutrition, and exercise.
Kids Brain Health Foundation Kid’s Brain Health Network and a team of experts co-designed and evaluated an Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) group intervention for family caregivers of people with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities. ACT is a mindfulness-based psychological intervention which aims to increase psychological flexibility. With funding from the Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation, ACT will provide indigenous, black, South, Asian and Chinese caregivers with culturally relevant tools to effectively manage difficult thoughts and emotions associated with caregiving and advocacy.
Japanese Community Volunteers Association With our support, Japanese Community Volunteers Association will provide support to family caregivers within the Japanese Canadian community. The services offered include caregiver support groups, research and the development of new programs and support mechanisms based on research findings. The goal is to cater to the specific needs of caregivers while also providing guidance for other ethnic communities facing similar challenges.
Inclusion New Brunswick inc. Individuals who have an intellectual and development disability and their families are open isolated and vulnerable. We are proud to continue working with Inclusion New Brunswick to provide greater consultative support and training for caregivers who want to help empower a person with a disability to live a full and valued life in the community of their choice.
Victorian Order of Nurses for Canada We are pleased to support the provision of meal delivery services to individuals who are unable to prepare or access nutritious means on their own. By delivering meals to their loved ones, caregivers can have peace of mind knowing that their family members are receiving proper nutrition and at least one healthy meal every day.
Hospice Toronto With our funding, Hospice Toronto will be in incorporating an equity lens to caregiving through the Creating Caring Community program. The program focuses on diversity and community engagement, seeking to provide inclusive care practices. The online toolkit includes various components such as program design and planning, cultural competency and understanding, language accessibility, volunteer engagement and training, and evaluation and improvement.
The Ontario Caregiver Organization Ontario Caregiver Organization seeks to improve the lives of caregivers by providing information, services, and support. With funding from the Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation, the Multi-Cultural Caregiver Resource Project would adapt and translate the I Am A Caregiver Toolkit into 10 new languages and collaborate with partner organizations to develop tailored promotion and distribution plans for each community.
UHN Foundation We are proud to support the development of Caregiver Training Platorm to support and provide training for family caregivers transitioning from the hospital to the home seeing. This web-based tool will offer healthcare tools and best practices in caregiving in a plain-language format. It will also include digital health literacy education clinics in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. The platorm will be co-designed with caregivers and clinicians, ensuring its accessibility and usability.
Young Caregivers Association The Young Caregivers Association is a leader in service, awareness and empowerment for young caregivers in southwestern Ontario. Our funding is helping them develop and expand services for young caregivers in both new and existing provinces. The goal is to ensure that all provinces can provide caregiver services to youth and families.
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre Foundation With our support, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre will be expanding its successful navigation model to other regions in Ontario through two new projects: the Sudbury-Manitoulin Implementation Project and the GTA Equity-Deserving Communities Project. The Sudbury-Manitoulin project aims to provide beter access and transition through Mental Health and Addiction (MHA) services for rural, indigenous, francophone, and low-income individuals, while the GTA project focuses on engaging and supporting underserved communities in the region. These initiatives will help Family Navigation Project demonstrate the effectiveness of its model throughout the province and ensure equitable access to vital MHA care.
Canadian Medic-Alert Foundation Dementia is one of the top 10 leading causes of death in the world. In Canada, the dementia population is expected to double to nearly one million Canadians by 2030 and is among the fastest growing disease populations in the country. With funding from the Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation, Medic-Alert will be developing and evaluating an early alert system - a technology wandering prevention notification system for care partners and all those with the client's circle of care.
Saint Elizabeth Health Care Saint Elizabeth is providing support and respite to family caregivers and their elderly loved ones. They combine a Respite Care Co-op and Digital Online Supports to create a sense of community and mutual support. With our funding, Caregivers can easily post requests for respite on the pla torm, and a CareShare facilitator assists in matching them with available helpers. Additionally, caregivers can access support groups and resources on the platorm and earn rewards for participating in the program.
Fondation Emergence Inc With our funding, Fondation Emergence will be improving the interventions and services by promoting understanding the realities of LGBTQ+ caregivers. The project will be adapted for national deployment in Canada including expanding training for professionals in the Health and Social Services Network and community organizations. The focus will be on francophone communities outside Quebec, and a version in English will also be available for caregivers in Canada.
Saskatoon Council on Aging We are pleased to continue our support for SCOA in expanding the caregiver support center, providing practical supports and easy access to information, offering virtual and in-person presentations, hosting events for caregivers to connect, providing counseling sessions, matching volunteers with caregivers, and forming a provincial support network.
SickKids Foundation With our funding, SickKids Foundation is continuing to provide education and virtual support to caregivers transitioning from hospital to home with a child who has high medical needs. Connect Care allows family caregivers setle back home through an on-demand virtual pla torm connects caregivers with a SickKids complex care nurse who is on hand to answer urgent questions 24/7.

BCFamily Caregivers of BCWe are proud to support the creation of a new learning management system that will help Family Caregivers of BC broaden their reach and participation of family caregivers living in more remote areas of the province.

NLSeniors Resource Centre Association of Newfoundland & Labrador Inc.We are pleased to support the development and distribution of videos and other information materials that will help support the journey of family caregivers in Newfoundland and Labrador.
CanadaInstitute for Advancements in Mental HealthWe are excited to help fund a multi-province research initiative that will map all available resources for caregivers of people with mental illnesses, and help caregivers overcome one of their most enduring obstacles - navigating the mental health system in Canada and accessing help.
CanadaFamilies for Addiction RecoveryFamilies for Addiction Recovery provides support to parents whose children are struggling with addiction through a free phone support line and one-on-one sessions with trained parent supporters. Through this funding, we will be able to help them meet and expand their support for family caregivers dealing with the unique challenges and stigmas of addiction.
ONSickKids Foundation Through this funding, we look forward to helping SickKids Foundation grow the number of family caregivers with direct access to Connected Care - a training and virtual support program for caregivers who are transitioning from hospital to home with a child who has high medical needs.
ONThe Princess Margaret Through a new e-health intervention called iCALM for Family Caregivers (iCALM-FC), The Princess Margaret wants to reduce distress and promote the psychological well-being of family caregivers of advanced and metastatic cancer patients. Our funding of this project will help The Princess Margaret conduct research and make recommendations to rollout the service nationally.
ONThe Baycrest Foundation With our support, the Baycrest Foundation is working to develop a Canadian caregiver assessment tool that will help those thrust unexpectedly into the role of caregiver understand their own needs, strengths and limitations. The tool will help healthcare providers recognize the value of caregivers, identify their needs and increase collaboration and coordination of caregiver services.
ONYoung Caregivers AssociationWe are proud to provide the funding needed to establish Young Caregiver programs and services at the local/regional level within 2 additional provinces, in order to assess and create an effective plan to eventually roll out in every province.
ONBrain Injury Ontario With our support, Brain Injury Ontario will provide free training for caregivers through the development of 5 self-guided learning courses. The educational modules will help caregivers expand their knowledge and provide coping strategies that will help them personally, in turn enhancing the lives of the individuals they support.
ONAutism Society Ontario Through our funding of the CARES program, caregivers of autistic children across Ontario will have access to a facilitator-led support group that will help parents foster a healthy and resilient mindset and skills for self-care. The support group will bring families together, allowing parents to connect through shared experiences and form a supportive social circle.
SKSaskatoon Council on Aging Once again we are pleased to support the work of the Caregiver Information and Support Centre in Saskatoon. With this grant we will fund the expansion of mental and physical well-being services for family caregivers across Saskatchewan, and facilitate dialogue with other provincial caregiver centers toward the goal of building a national support network.

ONBaycrest Foundation Through a monthly series of educational guides and webinars, Baycrest helps family caregivers navigate the complex health care system, provide education and support to help meet their needs and challenges.
SKBridgepoint Center for Eating Disorder RecoveryBridgepoint offers two-day workshops for family caregivers of those with eating disorders and disordered eating. Our support helped Bridgepoint continue to offer these in-person workshops and expand their reach by creating an online version of the course.
CanadaCanadian Virtual HospiceThis project helped Canadian Virtual Hospice expand their library of videos and other instructional material to cover a wider range of caregiving tasks, providing family caregivers with the guidance they need to deliver safe care at home.
ABCaregivers AlbertaWith our funding, Caregivers Alberta created an online course based on their award-winning in-person program, COMPASS for Caregivers. This course provides caregivers with the skills and strategies they need to take care of themselves and improve their ability to take care of loved ones.
CanadaFamily Caregivers of British ColumbiaThe National Caregiver Impact Project, in partnership with the CareMakers Foundation, brings together expertise from across Canada to make progress on accelerating caregiver friendly health care.
QCLa Fiducie du patrimione culturel des AugustinesWith our support, Le Monastère des Augustines is able to provide more respite stays promoting caregiver health, rest and renewal. The respite packages include specialized workshops that will enhance the ability of the caregiver to take care of themselves and their loved ones.
QCMcGill UniversityThe Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning at McGill University has a wide range of expertise and resources to help those caring for loved ones with dementia. Our funding helped McGill make those resources available to caregivers from coast to coast.
ONMcMaster University and Carers CanadaThrough our funding of a research project, McMaster and Carers Canada are creating a better understanding of the experiences of working caregivers and employers and gaining insights into challenges and possible solutions.
SKSaskatoon Council on AgingWe’re pleased to have helped the SCOA improve access to a broad range of practical supports & information caregivers need through website updates, online presentations and chat groups, and telephone support.
ON & BCYee Hong Center For Geriatric CareWith our support, Yee Hong launched The CARE for Caregivers Project, which is helping them assist the Gaia Community and Wellness Society to develop quality, culturally and linguistically appropriate services for family caregivers of Chinese older adults (and other ethnic groups) in Vancouver.
ONYoung Caregivers AssociationThe Young Caregivers Association is a leader in service, awareness and empowerment for young caregivers in southwestern Ontario. Our funding is helping them digitize core programs and training modules to make them accessible across Canada.

Canada Canadian Home Care AssociationWith our support, the Canadian Home Care Association expanded its reach to increase awareness and recognition of family caregivers across Canada. 
ONCircle of CareWith our funding, Circle of Care created the Caregivers Club, to support and recognize caregivers when they need it most.
ONCommunity Care City of Kawartha LakesOur funding enabled Community Care CKL to provide caregiver respite via transportation services for their loved ones. This contributed towards the sustainability of Community Care’s Specialized Transportation fleet of vehicles.
